When tragedy occurs, it is tempting to lose hope and give in to the misery. I’m the first to admit that this is my usual course of action following any major tragic events. But this time, with such an emphasis on loving and being loved, I wanted to focus on a few of the things I love the most in life. While there’s nothing wrong with raindrops on roses and whiskers on kittens, my favourite things tend to be just a wee bit different.
Here is a random, in no order, and in no way complete, list of things that bring me joy in life:
- When my friends understand my mental illness
- The way Rory snuggles with me at night
- Literally everything about Cooper
- How my family always has each other’s backs, even if it’s been a while since we’ve spoken
- Remembering the way my dad used to say “hey baby”
- The theme to Last Week Tonight
- Watching foxes play
- My partner
- Palm trees
- Sunsets
- Bright things in the dark
- Batwoman kicking ass
- Well made risotto
- The kindness of strangers
- The feel of a new book
- My new purse
- The sound certain keyboards make when one types
- Pens with awesome ink flow
- A blank journal or notebook
- Peter Capaldi as The Doctor
- Reading the work of my incredibly talented colleagues
- Spending time with friends and family
- Colouring
- They way an arrow sounds when it flies through the air and hits a target
- Fresh coffee
- Boots when they are on sale, and
- The way my partner says, well, pretty much everything
